Knowing God’s Will for Your Life

And be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye may prove what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect, will of God. Romans 12:2

 Walk with God.

If you are interested in knowing God’s plan for your life, then you must learn to walk with God. You need to develop a relationship with Him. You must cultivate your relationship with God. You must seek to know Him and not just seek to know about Him. Even though men began to call upon the name of the Lord in the early days (Genesis 4:26), Enoch was the first man to uncover the true delight of walking with God. He found something even Adam didn’t experience. He pressed into God until he learned how to commune with God through every facet of life. To find that dimension of relationship certainly required an intense spiritual pursuit. When the zeal of God captures you, it will ignite you with a great passion to walk with God and to be his friend. Noah knew the secret of walking with God (Genesis 6:9), as did Abraham (Genesis 24:40).

17 I love them that love me; and those that seek me early shall find me. Proverbs 8:17

Surrender your will to God’s.

Before God will begin to reveal His will to you, you must be committed to doing whatever it is that He desires for you to do. God will likely be slow to show you His plan if He knows you will likely not do that plan anyway. In order to surrender your heart, body, and soul to God, one must be willing to yield to the sovereign claim of a righteous God. What is that claim? We need to understand that man is separated from a Holy God by sin and there must be reconciliation. The good news is that God has made a provision for man to be reconciled to Himself and that provision is found in the once-for-all sacrifice made by the Lord Jesus Christ on the cross.

Many times we are hesitant to seek after God because we are afraid of what we might lose. Yet whatever we may lose is no comparison to what we gain from Him. Everything we need in this life is provided for us when we seek after God first.

Obey what you already know to be God’s Will.

Many people seem to want to know what God’s plan is for their lives, but they overlook the fact that 100% of His will is already delineated carefully through His Word. God has stated clearly his will, however, that will must be interpreted. We are responsible for doing what we know until understanding comes. A complete understanding only comes when it is given by those that are part of the true faith. On a low level, we know “thou shalt not kill”, “ thou shalt not steal”, etc.

If we do not obey the things that God has shown us clearly to be His will, why would we think He would reveal any further information regarding His plan for our lives? Obedience is an important first step.

Some of us wait to seek after God when we think the timing is right. The best time to seek God is right now because we don’t know what the next minute may hold for us. There’s healing and grace for those who lay aside every excuse and seek after God regardless of their life situation.

Follow His Earthly Leaders

One key component to finding God’s will is to seek the input of godly advisors in your life. The New Testament explains to us that those that are interested in righteous living must come through a divine structure in order to receive it (Eph.4:4; Romans 9:4). People don’t see this as ‘El (God’s) will and tend to reject this component of him. Man is unable to please the Father without accepting the body.

27 Now you are the body of Christ, and each one of you is a part of it. 28 And God has placed in the church first of all apostles, second prophets, third teachers, then miracles, then gifts of healing, of helping, of guidance, and of different kinds of tongues. 29 Are all apostles? Are all prophets? Are all teachers? Do all work miracles? 30 Do all have gifts of healing? Do all speak in tongues[b]? Do all interpret? 31 Now eagerly desire the greater gifts. 1 Corinthians 12:27
